Role of Diaspora

Migrants and their descendants maintain links with their homelands and make important contributions to the sustainable development in their country of origin.

Diaspora written on the door

In low- and middle- income countries, the livelihoods of many families depend on private money transfers made by migrants. Migrants and members of diasporas also transfer skills, knowledge and know-how to their country of origin. They become economically active by making investments, establishing businesses or promoting trade relations with their home country.

However, the potential contributions of migrants to their communities of origin are not sufficiently leveraged due to a lack of viable investment options and missing mechanisms for the transfer of know-how and social capital to their country of origin.

SDC's Engagement

SDC is undertaking different efforts at the policy and operational level to promote the contribution of diaspora communities to sustainable development in terms of financial and social capital transfers to their countries of origin.

In partnership with diaspora, the SDC also seeks to create decent work opportunities in partner countries and establish new trade relations. SDC also supports charitable activities of diasporas assisting in relief and local community development.
