Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis to travel to Berlin

Bern, 08.06.2026 — Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the FDFA, will be in Berlin on 9 and 10 June 2026. There he will meet the German foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, and research minister, Dorothee Bär, and attend the Soirée Suisse at the Swiss embassy.

Discussions with Mr Wadephul will focus on bilateral and cross-border relations between Switzerland and Germany. The talks will also cover the current status of the package of agreements between Switzerland and the EU, as well as the security situation in Europe and, in the same context, Switzerland’s present chairpersonship of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

As part of his attendance at this year's Soirée Suisse in Berlin, Mr Cassis will also meet with Federal Minister of Research, Technology and Space Dorothee Bär.

More than neighbours

The Soirée Suisse is a long-standing event that is organised once a year by Swiss representations around the world. It offers a platform for diplomacy, politics, business and culture, and brings Swiss representatives together with local and international decision-makers.

This year's event in Berlin is dedicated to the special neighbourly relations between Switzerland and Germany. In 2026 the Swiss embassy is celebrating 25 years at its prestigious location right next to the Federal Chancellery. Owned by Switzerland since 1919, the Swiss embassy building has weathered the major upheavals of German and European history in the 20th century. During the Cold War its location marked the precise boundary between East and West. Following renovation and expansion the embassy reopened in 2001 in what has become the new government district of Berlin. Since then, it has been a visible sign of the special bond between the two countries.

In addition to close historical, political and cultural ties, the economies of Switzerland and Germany are also closely intertwined. Germany is Switzerland's most important trading partner for both imports and exports.
