Migrants Voices and Empowerment

How we perceive and speak about migrants and migration plays a fundamental role in guaranteeing equality and the protection of human rights of migrants and forcibly displaced persons. That’s why migrants’ voices are critical.

Due to their migratory status, migrants and forcibly displaced persons often face significant challenges in accessing and asserting their rights. Low-skilled migrant workers often encounter significant barriers in accessing fundamental rights such as fair wages, safe working conditions, and access to healthcare.

Their precarious migratory status and economic dependency on employers or sponsors can exacerbate these challenges.

In addition, migrants are frequently excluded from decision-making processes that directly impact their lives. Moreover, the intersectionality of challenges faced by migrants - including gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status - amplifies the barriers they confront in claiming their rights, especially in contexts of forced displacement.

SDC engagement

The SDC works with migrants’ associations, civil society networks as well as diaspora organisations to raise migrants’ voices, and to ensure their views and needs are included in policy discussions.

The SDC’s efforts also make sure that migrants and forcibly displaced persons can enjoy their fundamental rights in terms of access to basic social services and are empowered through skills development, access to decent jobs and financial services.

Furthermore, the SDC engages with media schools and journalists in order to ensure a nuanced and fact-based narrative, which serves to combat harmful stereotypes around migration.

The SDC also aims to include migrants in its project development and ensures that services provided are inclusive and geared towards migrants’ needs.
