Durable Solutions

Forced displacement is often protracted with an average duration of 20 years. Durable solutions are therefore critical to reduce protracted displacement and to restore fundamental rights of displaced populations.

Woman finding a durable solution when returning to the Central African Republic

Women, men, girls and boys who are forced to leave their home because of conflict or climate related factors have to adjust to a new environment, find ways to earn their living while trying to stay safe. They have the universal right to a durable solution be it through return, local integration or resettlement.

Such durable solutions are achieved when displaced population no longer have specific assistance and protection needs linked to their displacement, can enjoy their human rights without discrimination, and achieve self-reliance.

SDC's engagement

The SDC promotes the creation of durable solutions for forcibly displaced persons by assisting local governments in integrating migrants into local development planning and in making local social services accessible to migrants and displaced persons. The SDC aims to reduce factors of exclusion and promotes equal access of female and male migrants to resources, public services and decision-making processes.

Switzerland also brings these operational experiences into the global discussions on durable solutions such as the High-Level Panel on Internal Displacement and the UN Secretary-General's Action Agenda for Solutions for Internally Displaced Persons bringing together development, humanitarian and peace actors.
